Union Films: What’s Coming Up This Week (03/11/2014 – 09/11/2014)

Wow; what a week it’s been for us! Not only have we held our spooky Halloween All-Nighter but we’ve also revealed that we will be showing Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 at Union Films at the same time as the commercial cinemas in Southampton! More on that later…

In the mean time make sure you check out the week ahead as we celebrate Southampton Film Week, the classics of cinema with our next Throwback Thursday event, take a trip down under with the Inbetweeners, battle alongside Hercules and meet some very unlikely Guardians of the Galaxy. Details of how you can find out more or get involved are at the end. But first:

the-act-of-killingThe Act of Killing, Monday 3rd November at 7.30pm

The first of our weekly films in association with the Phoenix is a Danish documentary that challenges former leaders of death-squads to dramatize their stories. Surreal, innovative and challenging it reveals the frighteningly banal reality of the regime.

This screening is the first of our films held as part of Southampton Film Week. You can find out some of the other films shown this week at www.southamptonfilmweek.com.

Next we take a comedic trip with Neil, Will, Simon and Jay as we take a trip to Australia with The Inbetweeners 2. Days are getting duller for the boys now their time at school has ended so when Jay invites the rest of the gang to join him on a lads holiday down under.

A backpacking holiday of a lifetime in an awful car and the battle between the cultural versus drinking, girls, and annoying fellow travelers – what could possibly go wrong? Hilarious comedy, perfect for the start of another week!

For our final Phoenix film of the week and also forming part of Southampton Film Week, we have something powerful, moving and inspirational. The Spanish Civil War forces the ‘temporary’ relocation of thousands of children to the UK. The film uses animation accompanied by the words of 14 survivors still living in the UK to reveal a story about the loss of childhood, the stripping away of identity and, ultimately, the hope of reconciliation.

The film turns the tragedy of history into something profound and uplifting.

upUp, Thursday 6th November at 7pm

The next film this week is the latest of our free Throwback Thursday films! Up is one of Pixar’s finest films and follows 78 year-old Carl Fredricksen as he leaves his humdrum life as a pensioner behind him.

Attaching his house to thousands of balloons he sets off to South America in search of Paradise Falls. Accidentally accompanied by the enthusiastic Wilderness Explorer Russell it leads to a fantastic adventure with the least likely duo on earth.

And best of all it is absolutely free!

The film that took the world by storm this summer comes to Union Films! The latest installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Guardians of the Galaxy follows the universe’s least likely heroes comprised of assassins, criminals, Groot and a man from Earth lost in space.

Accompanied by a soundtrack of brilliant 80s tunes, these anti-heroes must halt the villian known as Ronan the Accuser. A truly outstanding film, this is must-watch movie for everyone!

hercules-2014Hercules, Sunday 9th November at 5pm.

Now we take a trip back fourteen thousand years ago. Hercules is neither man or God, but being the son of Zues doesn’t make his life easier so he turns instead to battle. Throwing himself into battle after battle and joined by six fellow mercinaries, his eyes are opened when he is asked by the King of Thrace to train his men to become the greatest army of all time, every bit as blood thirsty and ruthless as their own reputations have become. Don’t miss out!
