Guardians of the Galaxy’s Awesome Mix Vol. 1 tops Billboard 200

Following the soundtrack of Disney’s Frozen, Guardian’s of the Galaxy‘s Awesome Mix Vol. 1 is the second soundtrack of 2014 to top the Billboard 200, selling 109,000 copies in the week ending August 10th. The 12-track album debuted at number three initially.

This makes 2014 the first year since 2009 where multiple film soundtracks have topped the US charts. The aforementioned Frozen soundtrack did so at the start of the year in January.

What makes Guardian‘s success all the more noteworthy is that it is the first soundtrack to reach the top of the Billboard 200 that is comprised entirely of previously released tracks, featuring exclusively 60s and 70s era music, including the Jackson 5 and David Bowie.

The music plays an important role in the film, as protagonist Starlord cherishes the Mix as his last connection to his home planet Earth. Prior to the film’s release, Blue Suede’s ‘Hooked on A Feeling’, which featured in the trailer and the film itself, also saw a boost in download sales of 700 percent. Listen to the track below.
