Nostalgic News: Forrest Gump released 20 years ago today

The iconic film, Forrest Gump, was released in US cinemas 20 years ago today back in 1994. It was then premiered in the UK on 7th October of the same year.

Directed by Robert Zemeckis – who has also directed the likes of Cast Away and the Back to the Future trilogy – and based on the Winston Groom novel, the film tells the tale of a young, unintelligent man with a big heart who serves in the army but is forever preoccupied with his childhood love, Jenny.

The film stars Tom Hanks, Sally Field and Robin Wright and won six Oscars including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor in a Leading Role, and Best Film Editing. Forrest Gump was nominated for a total of 13 Academy Awards and is listed as the 14th best film ever on IMDB charts where it is behind the likes of The Godfather and The Shawshank Redemption.

Since its release, the film has become a consensual favourite and is the source of many iconic quotes such as: “Run, Forrest! Run!” and “My mama always said, ‘Life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.'”
