Scarlett Johansson has been named the highest-paid actress of 2016 according to Forbes magazine.

Thanks to her performance as Black Widow in Captain America: Civil War actress Johansson earned $1 billion after 24 days. This goes a long way to explaining the total earning of around $1.2 billion this year. Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans jointly second, with $1.15bn each, for their roles as Iron Man and Captain America respectively.

The Forbes list is made by adding global ticket sales up, excluding any animated films, and only the highest-billed performances are counted. In the top five are Margot Robbie for Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad, which earned over $660 million this year, and Amy Adams for Arrival and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in which she played Lois Lane. British actress Felicity Jones also makes the list for the first time with $805m, mainly due to the earnings from playing Jynn Erso in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. She also starred in Inferno and A Monster Calls, which was released this month.

The top earner last year was Christ Pratt, mainly due to the $1.7bn raked in from Jurassic World, and Jennifer Lawrence with $1.4bn thanks to Mockingjay Part II and X-Men: Days of Future Past.
