Today saw the release of not only a new Rihanna single (written by Sia), from the official soundtrack for Star Trek Beyond, but also a third trailer for the film itself, soundtracked to the Rihanna song, ‘Sledgehammer’. Ah, what wonderful brand synergy!
In terms of trailer content, there’s nothing new in plot or story revealed from this trailer, that we couldn’t surmise from the previous two. What’s clear is that after a small backlash at the upbeat, clearly Guardians Of The Galaxy-inspired first trailer – which was set to “Sabotage” by the Beastie Boys – the marketing department are going for a grander, more operatic and tense tone. Personally, I’m expecting the final film to combine both approaches.
What we do get is more shots of the Starship Enterprise under attack by a seeming swarm of ships, the sight of the main disc falling to an unknown planet as Captain Kirk (Chris Pine) ejects to relative safety, and some glimpses at how the crew will be split up in the unknown environment. For instance, it appears for now that Scotty (Simon Pegg, who also co-wrote the film) will find himself in the company of the mysterious alien Jaylah (Sofia Boutella), while Spock (Zachary Quinto) and Bones (Karl Urban) will be banded
Directed by Justin Lin (who also directed Fast & Furious 5), the latest entry in the Star Trek movie universe sees the crew of the USS Enterprise more than two years into their five year mission exploring the uncharted reaches of deep space. When they encounter a new threat, and a mysterious new enemy with a grudge against the Federation in the shape of Kraal (Idris Elba), the crew and everything that they stand for will be put to the test.
