Star Wars: The Force Awakens wins big at the MTV Movie Awards 2016

Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Deadpool were among the blockbusters that won big at this year’s MTV Movie Awards.

Hosted by Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart, the public-voted awards ceremony took place in Burbank, California on Saturday (9th April) and was aired on US TV last night (Sunday 10th April).

The Force Awakens proved to be the biggest winner of the night, taking home the prizes for Best Villain (Adam Driver), Breakthrough Performance (Daisy Ridley) and Movie of the Year.

Deadpool’s Ryan Reynolds was one of the big winners of the night.

Meanwhile, Ryan Reynolds won the Golden Popcorn for Best Comedic Performance in Deadpool. The film, which has broken numerous box office records since it’s release in February, also won the prize for Best Fight. Pitch Perfect 2 also won two prizes on the night, including Best Kiss (Rebel Wilson and Adam DeVine) and Best Ensemble Cast.

Leonardo Di Caprio continued his recent winning streak, taking home the Golden Popcorn for Best Male Performance in The Revenant, while Charlize Theron took Best Female Performance for her portrayal of Furiosa in Mad Max: Fury Road.

Other winners of the night included Chris Pratt (Best Action Performance in Jurassic World), Jennifer Lawrence (Best Hero in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2) and Amy Poehler (Best Virtual Performance in Inside Out). Straight Outta Compton also won Best True Story, while Amy won Best Documentary.

Will Smith and Melissa McCarthy were also celebrated on the night with two special awards; The Generation Award (Smith) and The Comedic Genius Award.

In addition to handing out awards, the MTV Movie Awards also provided several exclusive sneak-peeks into upcoming movies, including Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them, Suicide Squad, Kong: Skull Island and Captain America: Civil War.

The MTV Movie Awards 2016 will air on UK television this evening (Monday 11th April) at 8pm on MTV.
