The man who brilliantly portrayed one of Charles Dickens’ most iconic characters, Fagin, in the 1968 musical screen adaption of the novel, Oliver!, has passed away at the age of 91.

Ron Moody is thought to have died in hospital, although specific details of his death have yet to be released. However, it is though that he was suffering from a long-term illness.

His widow Therese said: “He brought joy to his family and to the hearts of many and will be greatly missed. He was singing until the end.”

He was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor in 1968 for his performance as Fagin – the man who taught children how to make a living through pickpocketing, but lost out to Cliff Robertson. He did however win a Golden Globe for his performance.

The 91-year-old leaves behind his wife and six children.
