New Playmobil movie on the horizon

Following the success of The Lego Movie, which made multi-millions worth of profit, their German rivals Playmobil have reportedly got a new movie in the pipeline.

They have teamed up with On Entertainment, Wild Bunch and Pathe with an $80 million budget to produce the feature film which is scheduled for release in 2017. It’s the first animation of Playmobil, and they’re undoubtedly hoping to build on and possibly beat the success of The Lego Movie which was a surprise hit earlier this year.

Little is known about the movie at this early stage, apart from that it is directed by Bob Persichetti, who has previously worked on features such as Shrek 2 and Monsters vs. Aliens.

The rest of the creative team have been involved in On Entertainment’s upcoming film The Little Prince, with production for this set to begin in Montreal, with the movie dated for release in Autumn 2015.

With over 2.7 billion figurines sold across the globe and more than 30 whole play worlds for fans to create, these iconic toys are undeniably popular. However, by the time this feature is released it is likely to have to compete with the upcoming spinoff of The Lego Movie, based on the popular Batman figure and also due for release 2017.
