Spice Girls’ ‘Wannabe’ was released on this day in 1996, making the song 18 years old.

‘Wannabe’, the first ever Spice Girls track, reached number one in many countries on its release including both the UK and US. The track was taken from the girl group’s début album, Spice, and was followed by other hit singles such as ‘2 Become 1’ and ‘Say You’ll Be There’.

Spice Girls – who were a large influence in the societal ‘girl power’ movement – released their second album, Spiceworld, a year later in 1997 which also reached number one in the UK charts. The likes of ‘Spice Up Your Life’ and ‘Stop’ came from the album, marking Spice Girls as one of the most successful girl groups in the world.

They then released Forever in 2000 as well as a greatest hits album in 2007. Their last concert tour was during the years of 2007 to 2008.

Spice Girls performed at the closing ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics, marking it as one of the last times the girl group were seen together. They performed ‘Spice Up Your Life’ as well as the 18 year-old track, ‘Wannabe’.
