The nominees for the 86th Academy Awards were announced today. The awards show will hosted by Ellen Degeneres, and will be broadcast on ABC at 7pm Eastern time. UK audiences should be able to watch the show on Sky, which will start at 12am GMT. The nominations were announced by Chris Hemsworth, and Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President Cheryl Boone Isaacs.
Amongst the nominees there were some surprises, as well as some expected faces in the line up. Last years Academy Award winner Jennifer Lawrence was nominated again, this time for Supporting Actress, for American Hustle, for which she won a Golden Globe last weekend. American Hustle had nominees in all of the acting categories (something achieved by David O’Russel’s last film Silver Linings Playbook.) The film itself has 10 nominations. Gravity has 9 nominations, including Best Actress for Sandra Bullock, while Captain Phillips has five, although no leading actor nomination for Tom Hanks. The Wolf of Wall Street also has five nominations, including leading actor nomination for Leonardo DiCaprio, and supporting actor nomination for Jonah Hill. Five seems to be a magic number – Dallas Buyers Club also has that many nominations, while 12 Years a Slave has 8 nominations, with three out of the four acting categories included.
