It was announced today by Universal that a third Despicable Me movie will be released in 2017.
The announcement comes shortly after Universal released details of a spin off series named Minions, which is currently in production.
The Despicable Me films have been incredibly successful, with last year’s Despicable Me 2 taking an estimated $920 million (£561 million) at the box office. It has also been nominated for Best Animation at this year’s Oscars.
The films star Steve Carell as the not-so-evil villain and family man Gru. Actors who have joined Carell on the Despicable Me cast include Russell Brand, Steve Coogan and Kristen Wiig. The studio are yet to give details of the cast members or plot of the series’ third instalment. The film is set to be released on 30th June 2017.
Universal also announced today that a new movie based on Dr Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas will also be released in 2017. Unlike the 2000 movie, which starred Jim Carey in the lead role, the 2017 adaptation will be an animation. The film will be directed by Pete Candeland and released on 17th November 2017, 17 years after the release of the 2000 movie.
