It may be silly, sprawling, full of plot holes and ridiculous coincidences, but Richard Curtis’s outstanding directorial debut has become a Christmas classic. Love Actually is a sweet and fantastically funny romantic comedy – the ultimate romcom, according to the poster – and it has a glittering cast.
Hugh Grant, Colin Firth, Emma Thompson, Alan Rickman and Keira Knightley all contribute, and their comic performances are perfect. But for me it’s the little moments of melancholy that really make this film special – touches of poignancy between the big laughs that raise the film above the other titles in its genre. This tenth anniversary edition includes a sparkling new high definition transfer. It couldn’t be better.
Love Actually (2003), directed by Richard Curtis, is released on Blu-ray and DVD by Universal Pictures, Certificate 15.
