Based on one of the most influential American novels that never ceases to amaze with its literary greatness, Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation of The Great Gatsby lived up to Fitzgerald’s initial creation of a story that will stay a masterpiece forever.
2013 has been a good year for film, heavily assisted by Luhrmann’s rendition of The Great Gatsby. To say that expectations of Luhrmann were high would be an understatement with a previous filmography of the likes of Moulin Rouge! and Romeo + Juliet. Luckily, The Great Gatsby did not disappoint financially, pulling in a massive $348 million at Box Office, worldwide. However, despite a star-studded cast (Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, Tobey Maguire), the slightly disappointing Metascore of 55 is merely average for such an aesthetically-pleasing and complex character-driven plot.
The story follows the narrator Nick Carraway and his discovery of the enigmatic Gatsby. We then witness the life of Gatsby: the parties, the glamour, the sophistication, the love, the heartbreak, and the tragedy. However, don’t be fooled by the ostentatious Charleston or the existence of pop artists such as Will.I.Am featuring on the soundtrack; this is not a ‘light-watch’ but one worthy of emotional indulgence.
