Great

If this turns out to be the worst and least surprising song of their upcoming album, it’ll be because you played it too much in anticipation. So get very, very excited.

Jumping straight into the core melody as it uses short bursts of Lauren Mayberry’s voice as percussive notes, your attention is caught. Where ‘Leave A Trace’ builds the sound towards the first verse, ‘Never Ending Circles’ is a sweet kick of hypnotic and energising synth-pop from the very beginning. It doesn’t reinvent the CHVRCHES’ wheelhouse, although it certainly seems like Lauren Mayberry’s vocals have gained in strength and size since the first album. As the middle eight reaches its climax to lead us back to the chorus, her song becomes a shout, over the delicious reverb. Or it might be the lyrics which have changed – in the chorus they feel laden with sarcasm. The refrain “here’s to just another no-man” in particular is so flavoured. Whatever small detail of their music has changed, it’s all the more improvement on an already electrifying sound.

Every Open Eye will be released on Friday 25th September via Virgin/Glassnote.
