Review: OneRepublic – ‘I Lived’

0

The sixth single from the 2013 album Native, ‘I Lived’ is the most recent release by OneRepublic. Native received wide critical acclaim and included the UK Number 1 ‘Counting Stars’ – does ‘I Lived’ follow this through?

The music video for ‘I Lived’ sets the tone beautifully  – dedicated to and featuring 15-year-old Cystic Fibrosis sufferer Bryan Warnecke, the powerful struggles and inspiring bravery of his every day life is shown.

The song itself embodies this. Its lyrics speak passionately about snatching opportunities, and about owning every second of life. It reminds us that even pain and sadness are themselves reminders of our vitality. Lead singer Ryan Tedder has composed truly beautiful lyrics, which will undoubtable resonant with many listeners.

The melody itself is perhaps not as powerful as could be; the song overall is neither somber nor particularly energetic. Despite an undeniably strong message, commitment to the delivery seems somewhat absent.

That said, ‘I Lived’ is an anthem for hope and empowerment. Laden with meaning, Tedder’s lyrics combine with the song’s wistful tone to gently inspire listeners, and remind us all to keep fighting.

four star

‘I Lived’ is available now through the Mosley Music Group and Interscope Records.
