Dog is Dead – ‘Teenage Daughter’

I first saw this band a year ago in a quirky bar in North London with an audience which amounted to no more than fifty. I was pleasantly surprised by their enthusiastic indie pop sound. A year on, and the five piece band from Nottingham have just released their fifth single. ‘Teenage Daughter’ is taken from their debut album All Our Favourite Stories which has received a flurry of positive reviews over the past month. They are certainly making their mark and have been compared to the likes of The Maccabees and Bombay Bicycle Club.

‘Teenage Daughter’ is undoubtedly one of the better songs on the album. With its fairly low key opening and with lead singer Rob’s warm vocals, it would be easy to mistake it for a Noah and the Whale track. However the extensive use of harmonies throughout produces an almost choir like sound, which clearly sets them apart. The hook-heavy and confident catchy chorus is the driving force of the song; evidently written to produce mass sing alongs with waving arms amongst their fans.

Commenting on the song, lead singer Rob said “’Teenage Daughter is a song I wrote about a conversation I had at the end of a party. I was talking to a girl who thought she may be pregnant just after she’d split from her boyfriend to go travelling around the world. It’s how I imagined life would be then next time I saw her if she had a baby. It’s about biting your lip and taking life head-on.”

Dog is Dead have certainly made an impression, however they have done little to show that they have or will bring anything new to the table.
