Maroon 5 – Payphone

‘Payphone’ may not be the standout hit that ‘Moves Like Jagger’ was for Maroon 5, but it’s an exciting hint of things to come.

‘Payphone’ is the first single from the eagerly anticipated Maroon 5 album Overexposed, and I’ll admit, when I heard the title, all I could think was “Another song about an inanimate object? Really?” However ‘Payphone’ is an engaging catchy song about loss, rather than a sappy love song, or an ode to a phone box. The melody behind Adam Levine’s always flawless vocals compliments it well, and the lyrics are memorable and interesting. I particularly like the lines “All those fairy tales are full of shit, one more fucking love song I’ll be sick.”

My only problem with the song is the featuring of Wiz Khalifa’s rap. I didn’t feel like it added anything to the song, and merely continued the trend of pop artists inserting rap into their songs, to try and appeal to other audiences. I would have preferred a bridge expanding the song sung by Adam Levine if I’m honest.

‘Payphone’ is an exciting song that I’ve had stuck in my head since it was released. Now if someone could explain the reasons for the video for this song…
