Can you believe it? Bowling for Soup are on their 11th studio album to date, and ‘S-S-S-Saturday’ is the brand spanking new single taken from the upcoming record set for release this spring. It seems like only yesterday that we were bopping along to ‘Girl All the Bad Guys Want’, and when listening to the latest musical offering, that fact would be all too easy to believe.
Now, I am not saying BFS haven’t progressed in their long reign at the pinacle of pop-rocky goodness, because that simply isn’t true. BFS have worked out what they are as musicians and performers, and there is nothing wrong embracing that with both hands. But they have somehow managed to resist the forward thrust of contemporary music, remaining true to their childish selves. And ‘S-S-S-Saturday’ is no different.
Opening with a muted riff that smacks completely of early 2000s, ‘S-S-S-Saturday’ is unashamedly cheerful. The vocals are sugary and palatable, whilst the lyrics are juvenile fun and fantastically simple, capturing the lost childhood that many of us covet when life is more work than play: “Hate my boss, hate this place, wanna shove it in his face. He doesn’t know his girlfriend is texting me every day”.
The release of this record demonstrates that BFS have stayed true to themselves in a way that is refreshing but somehow still relevant. And this is partly down to the fact that the shackles of big music labels have been released. “The freedom is amazing,” says front man Jaret Reddick. “If we want to release a new record every 6 months, we can. If we want to make a Christmas album, or remix album, or sing in a Disney project, we can. We don’t need to get anyone’s permission.”
It seems like the world just can’t get enough of Bowling for Soup. And what’s more, it’s a song about a day of the week, that makes both musical and literal sense. Step aside Rebecca Black, ‘S-S-S-Saturday’ is the new Friday.
Fishin’ for Woos is set for release on April 26th, with a UK tour to celebrate that release playing to following venues:
