VVOLVES are a four-piece alternative/indie/industrial band from Cardiff who this week have released their second EP When I’m Down. A clear change in direction from their self-titled electropop EP released in January, When I’m Down, released on Peski Records, has more of a melancholic, alternative vibe with a stronger focus on lead singer Tom Winfield’s (a right laugh on Twitter, @Tomwinf) vocals.
The EP opens with the quick-tempoed ‘Clearer’, followed by ‘She’, a despondent sounding track but probably the best on the EP. The final track, ‘Where You Start’, opens to a haunting melody, almost like a male equivalent of Warpaint, continuing on with more tense and emotional vocals.
Overall the EP is a fresh sound from the band, sounding not dissimilar to something that could be released by The Horrors. Although it is a big change from their previous sound there is definitely something special in VVOLVES and this release has definitely excited many to see what they will do next.
