Kaiser Chiefs have called upcoming album Stay Together their “relationship album,” so you’d expect its lead single to be deep, emotional, and have something vaguely incredible and beautiful to say about love and such things. Instead, it’s not exactly either, oozing Take That for drunken students more than any kind of rock audience with gratingly vapid lyrics (“There’s a hole in my soul / That could only be fixed by two / It can never be filled / Never be filled / Never be filled by anyone else but you”) and production from Xenomania’s Brian Higgins, who is more accustomed to handling those duties for Girls Aloud and Pet Shop Boys.
Very poppy and electronic, it’s impossible to fathom that this is the same band that, last decade, was giving us thundering songs about society, war, and rebellion. Now, this frustratingly bland and toothless attempt at upbeat synth music does little but make me yearn for the days of ‘Everyday I Love You Less And Less.’ At least that had a soul.

At Boardmasters, Kaiser Chiefs called this ‘a gift’ of a song as they were struggling to live up to the success of their earlier records. Stick to the classics, Ricky.
