The first trailer for Anastasia, the musical based on the 1997 animated classic, has been released today on the BroadwayWorld Facebook page.

The show follows the story of Anya, a girl with a forgotten past, who teams up with con-man Dmitry in order to convince the Dowager Empress that Anya is in fact Princess Anastasia, the Empress’ granddaughter.

The musical officially opened on Broadway on the 24th April at the Broadhurst Theatre, with Christy Altomere as Anya, and Derek Klena as Dmitry.  Also seen in the trailer are Mary Beth Peil as the Dowager Empress, Ramin Karimloo as Gleb, John Bolton as Vlad, Caroline O’Connor as the Countess Lily, and McKayla Twiggs as young Anastasia.

The stars are shown performing snippets of three of the show’s songs, including the Oscar-nominated ‘Journey to the Past’ penned by Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens, who have now returned to write the songs and lyrics for the show.

Directed by Tony winner Darko Tresnjak, the show boasts lush costumes, grand choreography, fantastical special effects, and some of the classic songs from the film, such as ‘Once Upon a December’.
