Jim Broadbent confirms Game of Thrones role

British actor Jim Broadbent seems to have revealed his role in the upcoming seventh season of the hit TV show Game of Thrones.

During an interview with ScreenCrush, the Harry Potter alum said he wasn’t allowed to reveal anything about his apparently significant role in the show, but decided to go ahead and tease us with the general details anyway, saying: “I’m a maester, an archmaester. I’m an old professor character.” He went on to confirm that he’s in five of the season’s seven episodes, and shares screen-time with John Bradley’s character, Samwell Tarly.

The reveal isn’t surprising, with many fans speculating that he would play a maester or archmaester of the Citadel when he was cast for the show last year. In the books, Sam works with a maester known as Marwyn the Mage to learn of events happening far afield, such as Danaerys in Slaver’s Bay, so perhaps Broadbent could be filling that role. Alternatively, he could act as a mentor to Sam in his quest to work out how to stop the White Walkers.

Game of Thrones is set to return in the summer, with one actor signalling that the HBO fantasy drama could be back on our screens sometime in July.
