Nostalgic News: Waynes World was released 25 years ago today

Wayne’s World was released 25 years ago today on 14th February 1992.

Many films get dubbed with the title cult classic, but none live up to that status in the same way Penelope Spheeris’ 1992 misfit hit Wayne’s World. Starring the lovable Mike Myers as basement dweller Wayne Campbell, and Dana Carvey as his strangely endearing sidekick Garth, the duo have firmly imprinted themselves on comedy film history. With a slew of excellent catchphrases, merchandise, and the infamous ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ scene reenacted at every available opportunity, it’s fair to say no one will have forgotten the award winning film even a quarter of a century on.

Following the pair as they produce their own live cable television show from Wayne’s parents basement, the film is a celebration of all things ridiculous. From cutting hair with a dustbuster and tricking guests into the ‘a-scphinter-says-what’ gag; Wayne and Garth epitomise all things fun in their two wildly successful movies. Combating capitalist control in the first and organising the most kick-ass festival possible in the second, they are rife with one liners and pop culture classics. Schwing!

Starting with humble beginnings as a sketch show on Saturday Night Live in the late 1980s, the film was created off the back of its popularity a few years later; cashing in on the metalheads’ love of music and babes. With guest appearances from Aerosmith and Madonna before their cinematic debut, the pair had already made a name for themselves before exploding in the box office, debuting at number 1 and earning over $120,000,000 in profit. The film remains the most successful of 11 SNL-based skits, outdoing The Blues Brothers in the process.

With all this in mind, it’s safe to say that Wayne’s World will continue to party on for many years yet, with Myers and Carvey reprising their roles at special events a couple of times since the films release. Even in their 50s, almost two decades later, and with pubes named “Fred and Tony”; we are most certainly not worthy!!
