Starwars.com have today confirmed that Donald Glover will play Han Solo’s best friend and smuggler ally Lando Calrissian in the upcoming Han Solo film. The role was first played by Billy Dee Williams.
Phil Lord and Chris Miller will direct the as-yet-untitled film, which will explore Lando strained relationship with his partner, and also Han’s “formative years as a scoundrel on the rise in the galaxy’s underworld.” Insiders also suggest the film will show the dramatic poker game that led to Calrissian losing the Millennium Falcon to Solo.
Lord and Miller commented on the casting of Glover, saying: “We’re so lucky to have an artist as talented as Donald join us.” in a statement, before adding, “These are big shoes to fill, and an even bigger cape, and this one fits him perfectly, which will save us money on alterations. Also, we’d like to publicly apologize to Donald for ruining Comic-Con for him forever.”
Glover is also set to appear in the upcoming Marvel hit Spiderman: Homecoming. He will star alongside Tom Holland and Zendaya.
The untitled Han Solo film is set to be released in 2018 and stars Alden Ehrenreich as the titular role. Check out one of the most dramatic moments between Han Solo and Lando Calrissian’s below:
