Ellen DeGeneres has recently confirmed the inclusion of a transgender character in Pixar’s upcoming summer blockbuster, Finding Dory.

The voice actor of titular character, Dory told USA Today: “There’s a stingray that’s becoming sting-Rhonda, so there’s a trans sting in the movie.” This reveal comes after the great deal of debate on the potential inclusion of a same-sex couple following the clip released a month ago. The scene in questions seems to show a child with two female parents, which has prompted much online debate that the film could mark Pixar breaking new ground.

On this topic DeGeneres claimed naivety, stating that she wasn’t sure whether the speculation was true. She said: “I don’t mind the question and I don’t know if it’s true or not, or if she has a bad short haircut.’ DeGeneres went on to add, “Who knows if she is a lesbian?”

Andrew Stanton, director of Pixar’s Finding Dory said, “They can be whatever you want them to be.”

There has been a lot of pressure for greater inclusion of LGBT+ characters to be included in films with the hashtags: #GiveElsaAGirlfriend, and #GiveCaptainAmericaABoyfriend trending in recent weeks. Fans took to social media to call on Disney for the inclusion of same-sex couples within both animated and live-action films.

Finding Dory will be released in the UK on July 29th, 2016. You can see the most recent trailer below.
