David Bowie’s newly released album Blackstar has topped the US album charts for the first time.

The album was released last Friday, just two days before his death on 10th January. His previous album, The Next Day, reached number two on the US charts in 2013. This time around, Blackstar has sold the equivalent of 181,000 albums, knocking Adele’s 25 off of the number one spot.

In the UK, 19 of Bowie’s albums entered the charts, with Blackstar also taking the number one spot. Nine of Bowie’s albums also had the same effect on the US charts, with ‘The Best of Bowie’ reaching number four.

Blackstar is the first album to reach number one posthumously in the US, since Michael Jackson’s This Is It soundtrack in 2009.
