Pre-sale cinema tickets for Star Wars: The Force Awakens were made available on Monday (19th October) after the release of the final theatrical trailer caused websites to crash.

Due to such high demand, American sites Fandango and Movie Tickets were forced to undergo immediate site maintenance in order to traffic the sites.

Both Odeon and Picturehouse said on Monday morning that their sites had an ‘unprecedented’ demand for Star Wars tickets, in addition to those buying tickets for next week’s release of the latest James Bond film, Spectre. Odeon later tweeted “Fleet Commander: The ODEON galaxy is experiencing heavy traffic but is now returning to normal force levels. Thanks for your patience.”

Meanwhile, Vue Cinemas stated that it sold 10,000 tickets for their 80 nation-wide cinemas in the first 90 minutes after the tickets went on sale. It is as yet-unknown exactly how many UK tickets were sold on the first day of pre-sales.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens will be released in UK cinemas on 17th December. Watch the newly released trailer below.
