Tesco will become the first UK supermarket to stock vinyl records

It looks like Tesco will become the first UK supermarket to jump on the vinyl bandwagon.

Tesco is set to stock vinyl records from Friday 4th September, beginning with the release of Iron Maiden’s new album, The Book Of Souls.

Tesco music buyer Michael Mulligan’s told Engadget that stocking vinyl was the “next logical step” in the company’s strategy. “In the last year we began selling record decks in our largest stores and initial sales are very encouraging, so giving our customers some new vinyl to play on those decks seems like the logical next step,” he said.

Vinyl sales reached 1.3 million in the UK for the first time since 1995 last year. According to data released by the British Phonographic Industry, the format accounted for 2% of the UK music market in 2014.

Furthermore, while digital downloads fell during the early stages of 2015, vinyl has continued its resurgence, making gains of 69.4% in the first three months of the year.
