Reece Shearsmith is set to appear alongside Peter Capaldi and Jenna Louise Coleman in a “very scary episode” of Doctor Who.

The actor’s (as-yet unknown) role will see him reunited with his League of Gentlemen co-star Mark Gatiss, who has written the episode for the show’s upcoming ninth series.

Speaking of his involvement, Shearsmith said: “I am absolutely thrilled to be filming Doctor Who as Mark Gatiss has written a fantastic role for me in a very scary episode. It has been so exciting to be part of a very singular episode – which, I can say with authority will be unlike any previous episode of Doctor Who. It’s a joy to play a part in the show – certainly a badge of honour.”

Gatiss added: “I’m delighted to be writing again for Peter and Jenna’s brilliant TARDIS team and very excited about this particular story. It’s been brewing in the dark recesses of my mind for a while now! I’m also chuffed to bits to finally welcome my old friend Reece Shearsmith onto the show. He’s been badgering me for ten years!”

Shearsmith and Gatiss were both members of the four-piece comedy troupe, The League of Gentlemen. Shearsmith has since gone on to embellish his twisted brand of humour with fellow League-member, Steve Pemberton in the respective BBC Two series’, Psychoville and Inside No 9.

Shearsmith also appeared as Patrick Troughton (the actor behind the second Doctor) in 2013’s An Adventure in Time and Space – a commemorative biopic special written by Gatiss to celebrate Doctor Who’s 50th anniversary.

The ninth season of the BBC sci-fi series is also set to feature several other high-profile guest stars, including Game of Thrones actress Maisie Williams, Rufus Hound, Rebecca Front and Ingrid Oliver.

The ninth series will start on Saturday 19th September on BBC One. Watch the trailer below.
