Oscar-winning director, Alejandro González Iñárritu has unveiled the first trailer for his latest film, The Revenant.

Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, the film takes place in 19th Century Canada and follows the true story of Hugh Glass (DiCaprio) – a fur trapper who is mauled by a bear while hunting. Following his attack, Glass’ companions (played by Tom Hardy, Domnhall Gleeson and Will Poulter) rob him and leave him to die. However, through sheer strength of will, the injured Glass hauls himself back to civilisation and survives his attack. With his health rejuvenated and the anguish of their betrayal still resonant, Glass goes to seek revenge on the men who abandoned him.

Speaking of the film, Iñárritu stated: “This is the adventure of a man who survived the unimaginable through a long exterior journey to seek revenge and an inner journey to understand and recover all that he has lost.”

“I wanted to tell the story without relying on special effects,” he added. “I spent five years searching for the most powerful and unexplored landscapes, where we shot using only natural light on the rocky terrain of the remote wilderness of Canada, for a long period of time to evoke a very visceral response for the viewers.”

The film, based on a novel by Michael Punke, is already anticipated to get Oscar nods for both it’s director and it’s leading star. Iñárritu won the Academy Award for Best Director last year, in recognition of his acclaimed efforts in Birdman.

The Revenant is set to be released in UK cinemas on 15th January 2016. Watch the trailer below.
