Lionel Richie scores first UK number one album in 23 years

Lionel Richie has nabbed the Number One spot in the Official UK Albums Chart this week, following his phenomenally successful performance at Glastonbury.

The singer’s greatest hits album, The Definitive Collection – which features both his solo efforts and previous hits made with his ex-band, The Commodores – was released back in 2003 and previously reached Number 10 in the UK charts at the time of release. This is the singer’s first UK number one album in 23 years, since his compilation record, Back to Front, came out in 1992.

Speaking to OfficialCharts.com, Richie humbly expressed his delight upon hearing the news: “I was overwhelmed performing at Glastonbury in front of all those people and for the fans to make the album Number 1 is unbelievable. The UK has always been a special place for me, thank you, I love you all.”

Richie’s Sunday afternoon set was among the best attended at this year’s Glastonbury weekend and was also broadcast live by the BBC.

The announcement of Richie’s success was especially significant, as it was made on the last ever Sunday charts countdown. The Official Charts company plan to move the show to Fridays, in order to tie in with the new Global Release Day, which will see albums and singles released worldwide on Fridays, rather than Mondays.
