Rose McGowan fired by agents for pointing out casting call sexism

Actress and director, Rose McGowan says she has been dismissed by her agents, following a recent tweet in which she pointed out the inherent sexism of a casting call for an unnamed Adam Sandler movie.

McGowan – who is perhaps best known for her performance as Paige Matthews in the fantasy-drama series Charmed – took to Twitter last week to rail against the casting note which specifically called for actresses to exhibit their cleavages with push-up bras. She also coyly revealed that the note was for a film starring Adam Sandler.

The tweet that led McGowan’s agents to flee.

Last night (24th June), McGowan took to twitter once again, this time to reveal that her agents – who have since been named as Sheila Wenzel and Steve Muller of Innovative Artists – had fired her; “I just got fired by my wussy acting agent because I spoke up about the bullshit in Hollywood. Hahaha.

The 41 year old actress recently explained her reasons for making the initial comment in an interview for Entertainment Weekly; “It was just so dumb,” she said. “I was offended by the stupidity more than anything. I was offended by the fact that it went through so many people’s hands and nobody red flagged it. This is normal to so many people. It was probably even a girl that had to type it up. It’s institutionally OK.”

“The part that made me laugh was where it said, ‘Make sure you read the script so you understand the context of the scene,” McGowan continued. “That was the part that made me laugh the hardest.” The actress further stated that she was not “trying to vilify Adam Sandler.”

The actress, who is set to make her feature film directing debut on the upcoming thriller The Pines, also said she has been battling against Hollywood sexism for more than 20 years; “When I did my first film, I was told by my agent that I would need to have long hair so men in this town would want to fuck me and hire me. That was said to a 17-year-old.”
