Emma Watson has been confirmed as the replacement for Alicia Vikander in techno thriller, The Circle, co-starring alongside Tom Hanks.
The film – which has been adapted from Dave Eggers’ novel -is directed by James Ponsoldt and follows the story of a young woman (Watson), who is hired to work at an internet mega-corporation called ‘The Circle’ – of which the businessman played by Hanks is one of the managers. The plot centres around the idea of uniting everyone’s online identities (including email, social media, banking and online shopping) into one universal operating system, with the ambition of creating a new age of transparency and civility.
The story quickly develops into a thriller, as it becomes clear that the right to privacy is under threat when surveillance increases and all personal data is collected.
Ponsoldt told Variety: “Emma Watson is one of my favourite actors, and her incredible talent, sensitivity and deep intelligence will bring an electric energy to The Circle”
Watson is currently working on Disney’s live action version of Beauty and the Beast, scheduled for release on 17th March 2017. She is also set to star in the upcoming psychological thriller, Regression (which is due out on 9th October) and abduction thriller, Colonia.
