The FBI actioned a raid on the Chicago home of a man accused of leaking celebrity nudes on the internet last year.

At the end of August last year, nearly 500 photos of celebrities posing nude were leaked onto the internet. The high profile case included attacks on well-known female actresses such as Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting, Kirsten Dunst and Kate Upton. Perhaps the most publicised case however was that of Hunger Games actress Jennifer Lawrence. The leaks came about as a result of a hack on Apple’s cloud service, iCloud, where passwords were targeted in order to gain access to celebrities’ private photographs.

Up until now, the identity of the individual behind this attack on celebrities’ privacy was unknown. However, recently unsealed documents have revealed that FBI agents in the US have raided a man’s apartment in conjunction with last year’s so-called ‘Fappening’. Emilio Herrera’s IP address was allegedly used to hack into more than 500 iCloud accounts to leak photos online.

Special Agent Josh Sedowsky described the investigation: “Based on victim account records obtained from Apple, one or more computers used at [Herrera’s house] access or attempted to access without authorization multiple celebrities’ e-mail and iCloud accounts over the course of several months.”

The document also lists several victims, by initials only, who were supposed victims of the leaked images. Based on the initials it is assumed that celebrities on the document are Abigail Spencer, Christina Hendricks, Hope Solo, Jennette McCurdy, Olivia Wilde, Anna Kendrick, Emily Browning and Amber Heard.

“The IP address on Narragansett accessed 330 unique iCloud accounts between May and August 2014, according to the other. Of those, 291 allegedly belonged to people who registered their accounts outside Illinois. Those 291 accounts were accessed more than 600 times,” the agent wrote.

FBI agents left with a Kindle, cellphones, computers, floppy disks, hard drives and thumb drives, when they raided the Chicago home on 16th October 2014.

Mr Hererra has thus far not been charged with any crimes.
