ITV have confirmed that Broadchurch has been recommissioned and will return for a third series.

Lead actors David Tennant and Olivia Coleman will definitely reprise their roles as Alec Hardy and Ellie Miller, respectively, for the new series. Details of other cast members have not been confirmed yet, but are promised to be unveiled at a later date.

Chris Chibnall, the award-winning drama’s writer, is on board again along with the same executive producer team.

ITV’s Director of Drama, Steve November, said of the news that, “Chris Chibnall knows exactly how to keep viewers guessing and I’m delighted that he is going to take the story onto the next stage.”

Chibnall himself added, “We’ve been overwhelmed that nine million people every week have continued to join us on the twists and turns of Broadchurch. This third chapter has been a glint in my eye for a long time and I’m thrilled to be writing these characters once again.”

The second series came to a close last night (23rd February) with the overall series’ commercial reception not as favourable as the first, which took the world by storm back in 2013.
