Bruno Heller, the showrunner of Gotham has confirmed that the FOX series will be exploring the origins of Batman’s greatest enemy.

In an interview with TV Guide,  Heller commented that the series, which focuses on the life of the characters of Gotham before they take on their larger than life personas, will introduce the character in its second half run. Heller commented that “We’ve said you’re going to be waiting a bit longer for it, but this is America — nobody wants to wait. So, we will scratch the surface of that story, yes. But just scratch it — a little tap on the door.”

He went on to comment that the rest of the series will focus on the development of Edward Nygma. “Nygma is someone who becomes the villain, and we see that journey begin in the second half of the season.” Other famous villains from Batman’s universe scheduled to appear in the series include Mr Freeze and Scarecrow, while Black Cat and Penguin have already began their stories on the show.

Gotham stars Ben McKenzie as Detective Jim Gordan, David Mazouz as the young Bruce Wayne, Sian Pertwee as Alfred Pennyworth and Jada Pinkett Smith as Maria Mercedes “Fish” Mooney.

Gotham will return to UK television on Channel 5 at some point in 2015. Previous episodes are available to view on Demand 5 now.
