Further to an earlier report, George Lucas has announced that he will be donating the majority of his $4.05 billion settlement from the sale of Lucasfilm to Disney to charity.
The filmmaker has not announced which specific organisation the money will be going towards yet, but reports indicate that the chosen charity will be one that focuses on educational issues.
Lucas said in a statement:
“For 41 years, the majority of my time and money has been put into the company. As I start a new chapter in my life, it is gratifying that I have the opportunity to devote more time and resources to philanthropy.”
Lucas is the chairman of the Edutopia project, a branch of the George Lucas Educational Foundation, so it is likely that the money could end up there. Original trilogy star Mark Hamill recently announced that he was aware of Lucas’ plan to release more movies in the franchise, and that it appears episodes VII, VIII and IX will definitely be going ahead.
