It has been anounced today that Lucas Films, owned solely by George Lucas, is being sold to the Walt Disney Co. in a $4 billion deal. This includes rights to Lucas’ world-famous Star Wars series, where a new film is scheduled to be released in 2015.

George Lucas stated: “It’s now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of film-makers. I’ve always believed that Star Wars could live beyond me, and I thought it was important to set up the transition during my lifetime.”

The company, already owning Disney, Pixar, Marvel Entertainment and ESPN will now add Lucas Films to its repertoire, and will issue 40 million Disney shares in the deal.

The company hope to release a new trilogy, starting in 2012, with more films to follow.

The press release can be found here.

  1. Finally! Maybe someone will do something decent with the franchise at some point.

I’m hoping it’ll be equivalent to the Burton to Nolan transformation Batman went through.
