Tenacious D Kick Off Countdown to New Album

Californian comedy rock band Tenacious D today (February 3rd) unveiled the first glimpse of their upcoming third album. The 48-second clip, entitled ‘Rize’, is taken from the opening title track on the duo’s third album Rize of the Fenix, due to be released in May.

The D have been recording their follow-up to 2006’s The Pick of Destiny, which also acted as the soundtrack to Jack Black and Kyle Gass’s film of the same, since 2010, with a May 2012 release now confirmed. The title of the album, conventionally spelled Rise of the Phoenix, was revealed in mid-2011 and is designed to signify a ‘rising from the ashes’ for the band after their film’s poor performance at the box offices. The title track has been performed by Black and Gass for over two years now, and is said to be presented on the album in three parts distinguished by either letter or number. Other songs set to be included on the new record include ‘Roadie‘ and ‘Deth Starr‘ (spelling unclear).

Rize of the Fenix features now-standard D backing musicians John Konesky (electric guitar) and John Spiker (bass), and also marks the return of superstar drummer Dave Grohl who also performed on the band’s first two albums. The announcement of a preview of the album was made by the band via Facebook, with a special website at rizeofthefenix.com set up for fans to preview the track from just before midnight UK time.

Confirmation that the ‘fenix’ has been ‘rizen’.

Tenacious D are performing on the Main Stage at Download Festival on Saturday 9th June 2012.
