BAFTA Shortlist Announced

1

Daniel Radcliffe, Great Expectations actress Holliday Granger and the chairman of BAFTA Tim Corrie have released the BAFTA shortlist at a ceremony in Piccadilly.

There are no surprises in the category of Best Film, as Tinker Tailor Solider Spy, The Artist, The Help, The Descendants and Drive all compete for the coveted award. The Artist has been hugely successful recently, after wins at the Golden Globes.

The Descendants has also done well at the Golden Globes, as George Clooney won an award for his role in the film. He is up against Brad Pitt (Moneyball), Gary Oldman (Tinker Tailor Solider Spy), Jean Dujardin (The Artist) and Michael Fassbender (Shame) in the category of leading actor.

The Artist carries on its list of nominations as actress Berenice Bejo is nominated in the Leading Actress category with Meryl Streep (The Iron Lady), Michelle Williams (My Week With Marilyn), Tilda Swinton (We Need to Talk About Kevin) and Viola Davis (The Help).

Drive and My Week With Marilyn go against one another in the Supporting Actress category with Carey Mulligan and Dame Judi Dench nominated for their respective films, along with Melissa McCarthy (Bridesmaids) and Jessica Chastain and Octavia Spencer, both starring in The Help.

Best Supporting Actor seems to be the only category in which The Artist has not succeeded, as Jim Broadbent — for his role as Denis Thatcher in The Iron Lady — and Kenneth Branagh – for his portrayal of Laurence Olivier in My Week With Marilyn – compete in the category with Philip Seymour Hoffman (The Ides of March), Jonah Mill (Moneyball) and Christopher Plummer (Beginners).

The awards, due to be broadcast on February 12th, will be hosted by Stephen Fry.

  1. The section on Supporting Actresses should state that Jessica Chastain and Octavia Spencer starred in The Help, not The Artist.
