Preview: Orange Goblin at Engine Rooms, Southampton

Since rising from the primordial sludge of London’s underground extreme metal scene in 1995 Orange Goblin has become one of the founding pillars of UK doom metal.

Starting at Sub 89 in Reading the band will continue on to The Globe in Cardiff and Southampton’s own Engine Rooms before finishing the mini tour at The Haunt in Brighton. Support acts are yet to be confirmed.

Originally formed as Our Haunted Kingdom, the quartet recorded a split EP with fellow swamp monsters Electric Wizard before adopting their present moniker. Since then they have released nine albums, most recently 2014’s Back From The Abyss, and a further four EPs.

The band was originally a dedicated stoner-doom outfit but changed tack slightly after the release of Coup de Grace in 2002, adding in elements from eighties punk and more traditional heavy metal. The resultant product is a medley of familiar stylistic influences coated in a thick slurry of doom ooze.

Tickets are available here for £16.50. Doors at 19:00.
