Preview: Jake Bugg at the Guildhall (26/02/2013)

The number of “Who’s he?”‘s I get in response to mentioning Jake Bugg in conversation has dwindled down phenomenally over the past year, evidencing Bugg boy’s recent successes in the music industry. Being the second youngest artist ever to debut at number one and more recently, being nominated for the British Breakthrough Acts at the Brit awards 2013, it’s been an exciting year for Jake. Coming to the end of his UK tour, Jake Bugg is making an appearance at Southampton Guildhall next Tuesday night.

About as far away from a karaoke performer as you can get, there is no doubt that Jake lacks any form of energetic stage presence. This is often mistaken for arrogance, when in truth he is simply lost in his own words. Jake does not stand up and sing someone else’s words, to someone else’s music, that’s been written to please someone else altogether, his words are his own, written for himself and the fact that we all quite like them, well, it’s just a coincidence.

On stage after support acts Valerie June and Hudson Taylor, I cannot wait to see what delights Jake will play on the night! If like me, you really can’t wait have a listen to one of his earlier songs below, which amazingly has six times fewer views than more recent hit Lightening Bolt.
