Not content with releasing and promoting their fourth studio album Plumb earlier this year, Field Music have decided to record a covers CD, entitled Field Music Play…,  and an accompanying October tour, calling at Southampton Cellar on the way.

Plumb was released 13th February, and features some of the duo’s most progressive and ambitious work so far. The album keeps the Beatles-esque pop sensibilities in the choruses, whilst incorporating prog elements, such as the increase in complex vocal harmonies, and unusual instrument combinations.

Brothers David and Peter Brewis (the latter a former Futurehead) are influenced by a wide variety of pop over the last half-century, and the tracks selected for the upcoming compilation CD certainly reflect this, including songs by The Beatles, Leonard Cohen, Pet Shop Boys, and more. Talking to BBC Radio 6Music, the band explained; “it’s interesting to do a cover if you think you can do something with it which represents the way that you make music” perhaps perfectly demonstrated in their version of Syd Barrett’s ‘Terrapin’, the first song on the CD, below. In typical Field Music fashion, expect odd, grandiose, optimistic takes on some pop-rock classics.

Field Music play Southampton Cellar Wednesday 10th October, as part of their nationwide tour.
