SUSU Grad Ball 2014 first acts announced

The University of Southampton Students’ Union (SUSU) has unveiled the first set of acts for 2014’s Graduation Ball, through the priority sign up system.

Four-piece pop act Lawson and electronic production duo Gorgon City will perform at the event, which will take place at Oceana in Southampton on Monday 9th June 2014.

Lawson, who released their debut album Chapman Square in October 2012, have had several top 10 singles including ‘When She Was Mine‘, ‘Taking Over Me‘, ‘Standing In The Dark‘ and most recently ‘Juliet‘. Earlier this month, Gorgon City released the top 5 single ‘Ready For Your Love‘ featuring MNEK, with another collaboration on the way with Klaxons. Both acts will be performing in the Ice House room.

The Mariachis who featured in the popular Doritos advert will also appear at Grad Ball, following their performance at the Freshers’ Stateside Ball. The priority website states that SUSU are in talks with three other “very exciting acts”.

On Wednesday, it was announced that the theme for the event will be ‘Hollywood’. Six rooms will follow different American themes; Oscars, Gatsby’s, Casino Royale, Saturday Night Fever, All American Carnival and The Chinese Theatre. This follows a similar theme to the Freshers’ Stateside Ball which took place in the students’ union earlier this month.

The announcement comes after Union President David Gilani announced that tickets will cost £39, £10 less than last year. In a statement, Gilani said:

“We’ve had a good year for our events. We had a huge number of engaged Freshers’, much stronger attendance at our alternative weekly events like Laughter Lounge, and we’re no longer having to subsidise a weekly club night. We’re also lucky enough to have a venue (Oceana) with low overhead costs. As a charity, when students spend more in SUSU’s commercial areas, we’re then able to reinvest this surplus into funding other activities or lowering the costs to our members. In this instance, we’ve made the decision that graduating students would most benefit from a direct reduction in the price of the Grad Ball.”

Tickets will go on sale to priority customers on 3rd March 2014 through the SUSU Box Office, while general sale opens on 6th March.

  1. Lawson are performing at Isle of Wight Festival which is just a few days later … I’m predicting one of the other acts (maybe Rudimental, the 1975, Ella Eyre) will also be using this as a warm up session for their performances at IOW ….
