Although production on the film was notoriously difficult, The Others is one of the best ghost stories committed to screen. Set in a post-World War II Jersey, the film sees a mother (Nicole Children) trying to bring up her two light-sensitive children in an enormous mansion.
The big twist in the story may be widely known by now, but even if you know what is coming, it’s still a shock when it is revealed. Horrifying, startling, and overwhelmingly heartbreaking, this is a superb exercise in suspense and character.
The Others (2001), directed by Alejandro Amenábar, is released on blu-ray disc and DVD by Studio Canal.
