100 Discs of Christmas #4 – Ed Wood (1994)

Tim Burton’s masterpiece, ahead of Edward Scissorhands and Big Fish, is the hilarious and touching tale of Edward D Wood jr, the worst director in the history of film.

Buoyed by an effervescently upbeat turn by Jonny Depp in the role that should have made him a megastar, the film is one of the best portraits of delusional self-belief ever put on film and chronicles the trials and tribulations of a man with absolutely no talent whatsoever.

This film depicts the making of some of the most hilariously awful films ever made, injecting it with lovingly crafted pathos, humour and heart. It deserves to be considered a masterpiece and is a must-own.

Ed Wood (1994), directed by Tim Burton, is released on DVD in the UK by Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment, Certificate 15.
