Preview: University of Southampton Student Film Festival

We love new and interesting creative types here at The Edge. It’s basically how we came to be – we began by looking at what was new and cool in music, as an insert in the Wessex Scene. But a few decades later, we’re not only are no longer an insert, we’re also active celebrators of Film. This year, we’re becoming significantly more active, by collaborating with Wessex Films (the student filmmaking society) to bring you the first (hopefully annual) University of Southampton Student Film Festival.

On the evening of the 15th March, starting at 6:45pm, in Lecture Theatre B of Avenue Campus (Building 65), the 14 shortlisted student films (taken from the 22 eligible films submitted) will be screened in front of a live audience. These films aren’t limited to your stereotypical idea of a student film however, but instead covering multiple genres; everything from comedy to horror and even documentary.

There will also be awards handed out on the night to the student filmmakers, judged by a full panel that ranges from film lecturers, to university alumni that work within the film industry. There are eight awards in total, each backed by a different creative society (which are as yet unnamed, and will remain so until the night), each offering a variety of different prizes. The categories are: Best Film, Best Director, Best Acting, Best Screenplay, Best Editing, Best Cinematography, Best Sound/Music, and the Audience Award (voted for by the audience).

It’s sure to be a fun, interesting night, with the opportunity not just to support student film-makers, but also to find inspiration for your own projects. The next Ava DuVernay, Steven Soderbergh, or Edgar Wright, could well be among us. Imagine the possibilities.

The University of Southampton Student Film Festival will be held on Tuesday 15th March at 6:45pm in Lecture Theatre B. More details can be found here.

This is an awesome idea. A University of Southampton film festival would be a great annual event, but I wonder if it will get the attention that it deserves due to the many essay deadlines this week? Would it not be better to have it on a different night next year? That way deadlines will not deter people and the festival can get the attendance that it deserves. Thanks.
