Introducing: Niki & the Dove

0

Niki & the Dove are a Swedish pop duo who have burst onto the European music scene in the last six months. Made up of singer Malin Dahlström and keyboardist Gustaf Karlöf, the duo appeared at many festivals this summer following the release of their singles ‘The Fox’ in May and ‘DJ Ease My Mind’ in the summer of 2010. Mystery surrounds the name of the band, with there seemingly being no ‘Niki’ or ‘Dove’. When asked about the name, the band seem to skirt around the subject, but rumour has it that it is a reference to the songs of Prince.

The duo are, above all, an electro pop group. However, their sound is so rich and vibrant that this doesn’t seem a grand enough genre title. New single ‘The Drummer’ has an infectious pop beat, laden with synths, and is dominated by Dahlström’s instantly recognisable voice, making it the type of track which can be listened to again and again.

As a band, Niki & the Dove are truly unique in a market saturated with similar artists. Their quirky, danceable sound and vintage gothic style are already being enjoyed by many including Annie Mac, who has said that they are one of her favourite new bands. With an album set for release in early 2012, it looks like the duo are in for much success in the next year.

The duo, currently appearing alongside Wolf Gang, S.C.U.M, and DZ Deathrays on the Emerge NME Radar Tour, released their EP The Drummer on October 13th.
