BluChristmas #21: Bleak House (2005)

Everyone loves a Dickens adaptation at Christmas, and this is one of the best ever produced. Spread over fifteen compelling episodes, acclaimed screenwriter Andrew Davies superbly adapts Dickens’s huge multi-stranded novel so that it works perfectly as a mini-series. The cast list contains some of Britain’s finest actors, but for me Gillian Anderson is the highlight. She plays the mysterious Lady Deadlock, a woman hiding many secrets. But then again, so is everyone in this story.

Bleak House is famous for being one of the first big drama series to be shot in digital high definition. Although this Blu-ray presentation isn’t perfect, it still looks really good in HD.

Bleak House (2005), directed by Justin Chadwick and Susannah White, is released on Blu-ray and DVD in the UK by 2 Entertain, Certificate PG.
