Preview: Grease by SUSU Showstoppers

If you were asked to name a musical, chances are the first word on your lips would be Grease, and that is the very musical SUSU Showstoppers newest gang of freshers will be performing from this coming Wednesday. Set in the ’50s Grease follows the lives of working class teenagers in their last year of High School (but let’s be honest, you knew that already) and is suitably fitting for a cast fresh from Sixth Form.

I had the absolute pleasure of having a sneak peek at a rehearsal a full week before opening night and what I saw was a hugely talented group of 25 Showstoppers having the time of their lives. Their energy was infectious and try as I might to present myself as a ‘serious reviewer type’ their spot on comedy timing had me chuckling merrily through the snapshot of the show I got to see.

Jacobs and Casey’s Grease was a huge success when it hit Broadway in the ’70s, but you will know it from the revamped big screen adaptation which had plenty of musical changes to accommodate John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John. The success of the film has changed Grease forever and you will be glad to hear that this performance includes the hits “Hopelessly Devoted” and “The One That I Want” which audiences will be fighting hard not to sing along to given the performers aforementioned infectious energy.

“It will be a fun night with loads of energy that everyone will enjoy,” promises Trini Phillip, director.

Grease will be performed at the Annex Theatre at 7:30pm every evening form the 3rd – 6th December with an extra matinee at 2:30pm on the 6th. Tickets can be reserved here or bought on the door.
